Discovery of Self - Filling the Whole

When Einstein was asked, "What's the most important question?" he replied, "Is the universe friendly?"

Our behaviors and choices – both healthy and unhealthy – are an outcome of our view of ourselves and our perceptions of the world around us. Since the late 1600's those perceptions have been shaped by the scientific world-view that the universe is vast, cold and inhospitable; running like a big clock in which we are each proverbial cogs in the machinery.
This paradigm, not surprisingly called mechanistic, has focused on what is physical and measurable. The mind, consciousness, imagination, and the nature of perception itself, have received little or no attention in our systems of education, business or healthcare. If we have problems, the cause and the cure must be external: we seek out the new car, the new job, the next high, the new distraction or medication. We blame our spouse, our boss, our parents, our teacher, our society, our physical condition. We have become victims of our circumstances.
Discovery of Self has all the components of a curriculum which can really help strengthen responsibility, creativity and self-worth. Shifting the frame of reference away from power over what or who's external to power within the self is a critical distinction that can save individuals – and our society – a lot of suffering… If we approach people with caring and well thought-through, structured programs like Discovery of Self, then the ripples of healing will spread throughout our society. Joan Borysenko, PhD –
Tumor cell biologist, psychologist, New York Times best-selling author and co-founder of the Harvard Medical School Mind-Body Clinic
Your presentation makes one examine how we think and our everyday assumptions – it opens the mind. Compared to other personal/professional development programs, Discovery of Self comes across as more real. Your delivery and experience makes one want to hear more. Chuck Harstad – VP Corporate Marketing, 3M
In 1993, a haunting social critique was published, called A Nation of Victims. Stress from lives out of control has reached epidemic proportions and has manifested in myriad ways. Whether a business executive or prison inmate, addictive, compulsive or criminal behavior, you can't effectively treat the problem without addressing the underlying feelings of overwhelm, insecurity and isolation in a me-against-the-world existence. Fortunately, as it's become clear that our current operating assumptions about ourselves and the world are not sufficient, cutting-edge research from diverse fields including physics, medicine and the neurosciences have converged to create a new view of human capacity and cosmology… a new and transformational paradigm.
Jane, I want to thank you deeply for bringing Discovery of Self into our program of recovery. The four supervisors we sent to your seminar have had a fundamental shift in how they view themselves in the world, and this shift has positively altered how they interact with those who report to them…we are all about finding ways to move people from a despair paradigm to one of hope and possibility, and your curriculum provides a whole new toolbox. Kevin Lynch – President, Rebuild Resources
The program evaluations and feedback from participants reveal the added value of Discovery of Self. Through personal discussions with participants, as well as the written feedback received, I am convinced we are on the right track with this course. Here's a sample of the many positive comments we have received:
"She taught me more about myself in the first four hours than I learned in 34 years."
"She answered all the questions I didn't even know I needed the answers to!"
"On a scale of 1-10, I rate the course a 12 – off the scale."
"This course will be used as an everyday guide and inspiration to others."

Tim Huval - General Manager, Gateway Hampton
Discovery of Self is a conceptual framework for deep/ necessary shifts in outward perception and inward awareness, and a bridge to three basic yet undeveloped capacities that will transform how you live and how you feel. No aspect of your life will be unaffected. Every part of you will benefit.
Jane Barrash is the executive director of the Continuum Center. Her business background ranges from president of a market research company to owner of a business designing and building furniture. She has been with the Continuum Center for 20 years, developing programs that synthesize and apply the findings from consciousness and human capacity research. Jane has organized and conducted hundreds of programs for many diverse audiences including corporate and medical executives, maximum security inmates, homeless adults, state patrol dispatchers, professional athletes, teachers, alcoholics, compulsive eaters and emotionally/behaviorally disordered youth.
Discovery of Self has helped me focus myself and let go of thoughts that hinder or destroy parts of my life. It has broadened my view of the world and events in my life. It has allowed a peace and happiness I never possessed and allowed me to begin to grow, again, because I was stuck in my circumstances, not going anywhere productive. Craig Chosa - Stillwater Prison
Jane has a superb delivery – I really liked how she organized the myriad of material that's covered. I felt it had the right combination of story, experience, sharing, evidence and discussion. This is so important for nursing students to learn about… it was a fascinating day. Mary Johnson, PhD – Professor of Nursing, St Olaf College
Discovery of Self is destined to become a leader of its genre. I recommend it for anyone who wants to better understand our role in the universe. Ed Belbruno, PhD – Professor of Mathematics, Princeton University; Dean, Project Affairs, NASA Academy
The Continuum Center was founded in 1979 to explore consciousness, human capacity and the interconnectedness of life. Working with physicists, physicians, brain scientists, corporate leaders, cultural leaders and creativity experts, Continuum provides speakers, exhibits and seminars/training programs for a wide range of audiences and purposes.
